Lifeguard Certification

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Course Prerequisites

  • Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course. 
  • Student must demonstrate they can swim 300 yards continuously
     
  • Skill Test 1:
    • Swim 150m (6 lengths of the pool), freestyle or breaststroke, putting your face in the water to swim.
    • You will then immediately tread water for 2 minutes, using your legs only and keeping your head out of the water.
    • You will then immediately swim 50m (2 lengths of the pool).
    • You may wear goggles for all of prerequisite 
  • Skill Test 2:
    • You will swim 20 yards to the deep end of the pool where you will swim to the bottom to retrieve a 10lb brick.
    • Once you retrieve the brick you will swim on your back to the shallow end, 20 yards, while holding the brick on your chest.
    • You will then exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
    • You will have 1 minute and 40 seconds to complete prerequisite 2.
    • You are not allowed to wear goggles during prerequisite 2.
  • Certification Requirements
    • Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
    • Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios.
    • Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
    • Pass the final skills scenarios.
    • Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum grade of 80%. If a participant fails to reach the minimum 80% on the final written exam, a retest is allowed using the other version of the exam, provided that the participant has passed the practical assessment.
    • Blended Learning only: complete all eLearning modules.
