Adult Acting Class: All Levels

What is it: Come discover the joy of play through an exciting mix of theatre games, improvisation, and ensemble building! In this fun and supportive environment, learn new skills that translate not just to film and stage, but to your everyday life as well – public speaking, working with a group, and becoming courageous in new situation. Try something fun while learning to be at ease no matter the situation. Embrace your creativity and discover the joy of play! 

Our goal is to create a safe, joyful environment where creativity and self-expression are nurtured and encouraged, respect for self and others is fostered, and where appreciation and participation in the theatre arts can begin. In the these seven weeks, students will learn about movement, improvisation, character building and scene study; all culminating in a workshop performance at the JCC for members, friends and family. Open to new and returning students. 

First class example:
  • Opening Circle – Group introductions and vision statement
  • Warm up games and exercises
  • 10 min break
  • Scene Study Short Scene: *each student gets stage time every class*

When: Tuesday rehearsals: February 6, 13, 20, 27; March 5, 12, 19; Final workshop performance: Wednesday, March 20

Meet Your Instructor: Brian Powell

Brian Powell has a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and over thirty years of experience as an actor, teacher, director, producer and writer in the theatre, film and television industry. He has worked with John Cusack, Tim Robbins, Jack Black, Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack, Adam McKay, Stephen Frears, Steve Pink, Bob Balaban, George Armitage, Paul Adelstein, Joyce Piven, Shannon Lee, Peter Sellars, and many more.

Brian starts where the student is and works through character development and emotional connection to the work. Scene study and improv provide the foundation, working from a number of proven methods as well as finding what works for each student individually. Brian brings out what is unique and powerful in your personality and talent, teaching you to approach the work with joy and passion.
