What to Expect from Les Mills BODYPUMP

You have heard all about the new Les Mills BODYPUMP workout coming to the JCC. It sounds like an amazing way to build lean muscle and burn up to 600 calories per hour. But you have never lifted weights before and that sounds scary.
Fear not JCC Member, we have put together a guide to everything Les Mills so you can make your mind at ease before coming to the newest way to workout at the JCC.

What it is
Les Mills BODYPUMP was founded in New Zealand as a way to introduce weight lifting to large groups of people without creating big muscles. Using a low-weight barbell, BODYPUMP uses more than 800 lifts per hour to challenge you with an intermediate to advanced workout. The class is set to fast-paced exercise inducing music. But you won’t get bored, the music and the workout changes every three months.

What to expect when you get there
Before you come to BODYPUMP, bring some water and a towel and wear comfortable workout attire. You will be sweating. The JCC will try to have almost everything ready for you before class starts, but make sure you have a step with one to two platforms, two weight clips, a barbell and a variety of weight plates. We recommend that you start light and build up weight, even during class. It may take a couple of classes for you to find the perfect weight limit. Just because you can squat 160 pounds, take less for BODYPUMP. Remember, you will be doing a lot more reps than a standard weight lifting routine.

What you will be doing

There are many types of exercises; everything from squats and lunges for your legs to bicep curls, chest presses and tricep pushbacks for your arms and planks and crunches for your core. At the beginning of each music track, the instructor will explain proper form and technique. This is very important to avoid injury and work the proper muscle groups. Instructors will be keeping a close watch during the class to correct your form and will be able to answer questions after class. If you have any questions, please ask. Especially in the beginning, there will be a learning curve for all of us.

How long until for results
Les Mills recommends doing BODYPUMP three times per week for the best results. Most people are sore the first couple of days, but within a couple of weeks, you should start to see an increase in muscle. As with any workout program, the amount of effort you put in will determine how much you get out of the workout.
