The move of the Republic Bank Golf Challenge to the Standard Country Club has opened up the opportunity to expand tournament offerings. New this year will be a tennis tournament and a bridge tournament that will add more excitement and allow more people to participate in fun activities while providing program support to Jewish Family & Career Services and the Jewish Community Center.
“For years, this sporting event has been limited to participation only from golfers,” commented Reed Weinberg, tournament chair. “Now with the addition of these two popular activities, we open the door to many more people who want to participate in this community-wide event.”
Jody Garner, the tennis pro at Standard, will be assisting the new tennis volunteer committee to organize the tournament. That committee includes Julie Ellis, Shelly Breier, Jennifer Tuvlin, Allison Roemer and Sara Wagner. The tennis tournament, which will run from 2-5 p.m.; will be a mixed doubles, round robin format for 3.0 or below and 3.5 or above. Players can register as an individual or as a doubles team. The registration fee is $60 per person, which includes dinner.
Mauri Malka, director of the JFCS Klein Older Adult Services, will organize the bridge tournament. In addition to her professional duties at JFCS, Mauri is a manager and director of the Double D Duplicate Club at the Louisville Bridge Center. She also teaches bridge at the LBC. “There is a core group of players at Standard who we hope will play and if we get players from the Bridge Center and other bridge clubs, it will be a fun tournament,” said Malka.
The duplicate bridge tournament will run from 1-5 p.m. It would be best to select partners and register together; however, the $25 registration fee is per person. If participants would like to join everyone for dinner, the cost will be $35 per person.
“We are pleased that many past sponsors are coming back to participate in golf,” commented Judy Freundlich Tiell, executive director of JFCS. “We appreciate Scott Trager’s recruitment of sponsors and hope these two additional competitions will bring in new sponsors.”
Registrations for all events are due by June 15. For more information, contact Sally Hollingsworth at 452-6341, ext. 240.
