For some, sponsoring the annual Players Challenge is a chance to give back to the facility that holds several of their childhood memories.
The 12th annual Republic Bank Players Challenge is Monday, June 20 with a 12:30 p.m. tee time at the Standard Club, and Davis Jewelers owner and sponsor, Hank Davis, said he’ll be there with his golf clubs.
“When I was young I used to do a lot at the JCC. It’s still part of my upbringing. I wanted to give back,” Davis said. Davis Jewelers has been a sponsor of the Players Challenge for several years. The store gives a watch of up to a $10,000 value to anyone who gets a hole-in-one on a specific hole.
The Players Challenge raises money to support both The J and Jewish Family and Career Services. Money goes toward help people in need become members at The J or attend Summer Camp. It also subsidized counseling services at JFCS to help individuals strengthen their lives.
The fun-filled day is full of sports, contests and games. Many people enjoy the 18-hole golf scramble. And, for the non-golfers out there, the Players Challenge offers a Duplicate Bridge Tournament and Canasta Tournament as well as an opportunity to wet your whistle with a Heaven Hill Bourbon tasting.
Each year, the Players Challenge greatly relies on sponsors and a silent auction to raise funds for the beloved services The J and JFCS provides for the community.
Davis, who is a 4th generation owner of his family jewelry store, said it’s hard for businesses who get hammered with fundraising questions every week to decipher which ones to sponsor.
“When you take a step back and think ‘What if there wasn’t any funds for The J or JFCS to serve the community with, then what?’ that’s when you should want to become a sponsor,” he said.
