Shalom Sesame Comes to AJ for Chanukah

Chanukah means candles and cookies, menorahs and doughnuts, dreidels and Grover on Rechov Sumsum in Israel. At least it does when you come to the Family Chanukah Party at Adath Jeshurun on Sunday, December 5.

 

The fun starts with a hot lunch at 12:30 p.m. followed by a wide variety of activities offering something for all children from preschoolers through preteen. They will be able to choose from making real candles, playing dancing doughnuts, coloring stained glass, customizing dreidels, icing cookies, creating edible menorahs and more.

At 2 get ready for a taste of the Israeli version of Sesame Street – Shalom Sesame’s Chanukah episode from the 92nd Street Y. Shalom Sesame is a new a DVD series set on Rechov Sumsum, a street in Israel, in a Sesame-created neighborhood with a mix of Israelis. Religious and secular, Russian and Ethiopian immigrants, Jews and Arabs, adults and children living alongside a cast of Muppets – including Oscar the Grouch’s Israeli cousin, Moishe Oofnik.

The beloved Muppet, Grover, is a visitor to Rechov Sumsum. Through Grover’s Israel experience, the young viewer will be exposed to the diversity of Israel and Jewish life. In honor of the series’ launch, the 92nd Street Y is broadcasting this premiere of Shalom Sesame’s 30-minute Chanukah episode, which will include a special visit from Grover live on the Y’s stage.
There is no charge for the Shalom Sesame presentation, but if you come for lunch and the Chanukah party, admission is $7 for adults and $4 for children if you make your reservation by Monday, November 29.
