Janet, Sonny and Eileen Meyer hosted members of the Chevra Kadisha at a luncheon on Sunday, February 21, honoring the memory of the late David Kahn, a Chevra Kadisha member who died at the age of 100 in October 2009. Kahn’s son, Arnold, came to Louisville with his wife, Jane, to attend the event.
The Meyers were joined at the luncheon by Karen Abraham, Michael Cohen, Cantor Sharon Hordes, Eleanor and Gary Marcusson, Adele Pearlman, Emily Podgursky, Larry Singer, Deborah Slosberg, Carole Snyder, Rabbi Joel Wasser and Stephi Wolff.
During his remarks, Rabbi Wasser mentioned that on the day Moses died, the 7th of Adar, God took care of his burial. Then God said any burials from that time on would be handled by the Chevra Kadisha. Sonny Meyer notes the luncheon was purposely scheduled for the 7th of Adar to coincide with the anniversary of the delivery of God’s instructions.
Other members of the Chevra Kadisha who were unable to attend the luncheon are Jim Loeser, Stanford Reikes, Drew Fisher, Jake Wishnia, Bill Rubin, Fred Levein, Jane Golding, Marty Horrar, Kathy Karr, Paula O’Connell, Jan Weber and Sarah Yamin.

Note: A Chevra Kadisha is a loosely structured organization of Jewish men and women who see to it that the bodies of Jews are prepared for burial according to Halacha (Jewish law) and are protected from desecration until burial. Two of the main requirements are the showing of proper respect for a corpse, and the ritual cleansing of the body and subsequent dressing for burial. It is usually referred to as a burial society in English.
