Melton Fits into the Modern Lifestyle of Today’s Busy Adults

Many of you might feel, as my husband and I once did, that the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School program would be just a little too bookish for you. You, like we, probably would be just as happy not to have to crack a book again except for our own reading pleasure.

It turns out the Melton experience is centered on stimulating interactive class discussions about Jewish topics of interest. The classroom environment is designed for adults at all levels of knowledge and practice and the world-class curriculum developed by educators at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem helps you rediscover Judaism on your terms.

Melton is not particularly bookish, but it does involve perusing (should you choose do so) thought-provoking written material that makes for enjoyable reading. Since the program doesn’t involve tests, homework or grades, you get out of the course what you put into it – with no pressure to do more than you want to do.

In return for your two-year commitment to the program, you will gain a profound understanding of what it means to be Jewish by exploring traditional texts and taking part in lively discussions on Jewish thought, practice, ethics and history. A side benefit is the beautiful friendships that develop as a result of exploring Judaism with classmates of all ages from throughout the community.

New this year is a class designed for busy adults with young families. The Foundations of Jewish Family Living will give you the tools to raise a Jewish family.

Courses for the 2010-2011 school years include the First Year Core Curriculum: Purposes of Jewish Living and Rhythms of Jewish Living; and Second Year Core Curriculum: Ethics of Jewish Living and Dramas of Jewish Living through the Ages. The cost for each year-long course is $525 (30 weeks, two hours per week), which includes the Student Reader. Classes will begin in October. A new course, Foundations of Jewish Family Living, a 20-week mini-course (1.5 hours per week, $200) will begin in January 2011. Click here for more information.
