JFCS’ “Shabbos Friends” Continues to Grow and Reach More Seniors

Shabbos Friends is a relatively new program offered by volunteers associated with JFCS. Volunteers make a once monthly visit to an assigned assisted living or nursing facility to share a bit a Sabbath delight with the Jewish residents living there. The volunteer brings grape juice and a freshly baked challah to each individual and says the Sabbath blessings as well.

This is an extremely meaningful experience for both the volunteer and the recipient. “After volunteering at the Episcopal Church Home as a ‘Shabbos Friend’ for the past few months, I can honestly say it is the most rewarding and gratifying experience I have had in a very long time,” said Linda Stein. “After caring for my aging parents and a dear uncle for many years, I felt a void that has somewhat been filled by this experience. My dad attended Shabbat services and Torah Study for many years, so when I visit these residents on my Friday afternoon, I can only imagine how much he would have enjoyed the same kind of visits.”

“I love Linda Stein’s visits each month,” said Faye Davis, a resident of the Episcopal Church Home. “She really brightens up my day, and it makes me feel good that JFCS remembers us on the Sabbath. These visits make me happy to be Jewish and bring me such happiness to do the blessings with Linda.”

“Most of the residents are so appreciative and thankful for my visits and many even recite some of the blessings with me. I’m getting to know them and enjoy the personal conversations with many of them as well. I really appreciate the opportunity to participate in this wonderful project,” said Stein.

More volunteers are needed to visit other facilities in the Louisville area. Please contact Shelley Kahn, Volunteer Coordinator at JFCS if you are interested at 452-6341 or skahn@jfcslouisville.org.
