Louisville husband and wife artists, Eugene Thomas and CJ Fletcher will showcase 14 mixed media paintings at the Jewish Community Center’s Patio Gallery from Sunday, February 27-Thursday, April 21. The community is invited to meet the artists at an Opening Reception on Sunday, February 27, at 2 p.m.
Eugene Thomas is a studio artist who works in a variety of media. His work has been exhibited in many local galleries and in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Boston and Brookyln. Thomas says his paintings are inspired by spirituality and express truth. “One of the primary functions of art is to enlighten mankind, especially now, in these defining moments in the world today. Understanding that, I seek to express truth in both emotion and spirit.”
CJ Fletcher comes to Louisville from Nashville, Tennessee, where she “did a lot of crafts” as a child growing up. Using a common color pallet, Fletcher opens minds to all sides of an entry way in her series called “The Doors.” She says, “My aim is to provoke thought of a door before you enter it; after all, thought is what caused us to enter that particular door in the first place.”
The Patio Gallery presents a broad variety of different media, artist groups and individuals. We have featured shows that include sculptures, textiles, photography, and painting with approaches that range from representational to abstract, from traditional to cutting edge. Patio Gallery Director Bette Levy says, “We try to foster an appreciation of today’s 2D and 3D artists, and we often include artists who reside outside of Louisville. In addition, we often offer exhibits that address significant social issues.”
