Families Learn to Bake for Chanukah

On Sunday, November 14, 26 mothers, fathers, grandmothers brought their children and grandchildren – kindergarteners through fifth graders – to Najla’s Inc. for an afternoon of cooking fun.

In the Sweets with your Sweeties program, families learned Chanukah cooking techniques. They made latkes for scratch – grating potatoes, mixing the ingredients, squeezing out the liquid and shaping the patties.

If you have latkes, you also need homemade applesauce. And there’s no better way to finish off a Chanukah meal than with soofganiyot (jelly doughnuts). It was great fun to knead the dough and to finish them off with jelly filling and glaze.

Best of all, the participants got to eat what they had made and take the leftover sweets home.

The master chef and teacher for the day was Najla R. Aswad, owner of Najla’s Inc., a local, award-winning specialty food company that is certified kosher by the Orthodox Union. All Najla’s products are handcrafted with all natural premium ingredients.

Aswad started baking with her mother as a child. She started baking professionally in 1980’s. She loves teaching classes and empowering children through learning the basics of cooking and establishing good eating habits early in life.
The program was planned by the JCL’s Children’s Committee. The event co-chairs were Beth Haines and Lisa Resnik. The JCL Children’s Committee chair is Karen Kohn and the professional point person is Julie Hollander.
