Fascinating Speaker Coming to Adath Jeshurun

April 7, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu is the first native-born black rabbi in Sub-Saharan Africa, the chief Rabbi of Uganda and the first Jewish member of the Ugandan Parliament. He is the leader of the Abayudaya Jewish Community, a 100-year-old community of about 2,000 Jews who live among their Christian and Muslim neighbors in scattered villages in Eastern Uganda. Rabbi Sizomu grew up during the devastating reign of Idi Amin, who outlawed Judaism.

Rabbi Sizomu attended the five-year Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. As an ordained rabbi with a greater understanding of rabbinic Judaism, he returned to Uganda to continue to bring safety and security to his community. He and his wife, Tziporah have five children.

Rabbi Sizomu will be sharing the story of his very unique personal journey, as well as the history of the 100-year-old Abayudaya community.

This event is being held at Adath Jeshurun, 2401 Woodbourne Avenue.

This event free of charge and open to the community. No tickets are needed.
