About David Grossman Born in Jerusalem in 1954, David Grossman is the leading Israeli writer of his generation. One of Israel’s boldest voices of conscience, he has been hailed as a “secular prophet” and his fiction and journalism have been translated into over thirty languages. He is the author of eight internationally acclaimed novels and two powerful journalistic books addressing the plight of Israel’s Arab minority and that of the Palestinians. His great epic To the End of the Land was proclaimed one of the most searing antiwar novels ever written and appeared on over a dozen Top 10 Books of 2010. In a reviewer’s words: “He weaves the essences of private life into the tapestry of history with deliberate and delicate skill; he has created a panorama of breathtaking emotional force, a masterpiece of pacing, of dedicated storytelling, with his characters whose lives are etched with extraordinary, vivid detail…This is one of those few novels that feel as though they have made a difference to the world.” His new novel, A Horse Walks into a Bar, is haunting in its effortless dexterity and dynamic contradictions. Set in a comedy club in a small Israeli town where an audience awaits an evening of amusement, they instead witness the comedian’s personal hell. Ultimately, this brave book addresses human suffering, society, truth and love – all of the surprising, breathtaking aspects of the human condition.
