AJ Announces Fall 92nd Street Y Live Lectures

Congregation Adath Jeshurun has announced its fall 2012 schedule of simulcast programs in the Live from New York’s 92nd Street Y lecture series and invites the community to join them in the synagogue’s Charles and Jean K. Erskine auditorium. Tickets are $10 per show or $25 for the series of three.

 

The first offering, “On Julia Child at 100 – an Appreciation,” with Judith Jones, Laura Shapiro and Alexandra Leaf, will be presented on Sunday, October 28. The experience will include wine and appetizers prepared by Sullivan University Cullinary Arts chefs at 7 p.m., and the broadcast will begin at 7:30.

In this centennial year of Julia Child’s birth, Judith Jones (vice president and senior editor at Alfred A. Knopf and editor of Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and Laura Shapiro (culinary historian and author of a prize-winning Julia Child biography) come together to celebrate America’s first lady of French food. Alexandra Leaf is a culinary historian and cookbook author.

During the Monday, November 26 broadcast, Jodi Kantor will interview Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and bestselling author Anna Quindlen. Dessert and coffee will be served at 7:30 p.m. and the broadcast will begin at 8.

Motherhood, journalism, life in her 30’s and what comes afterwards – Anna Quindlen reveals it all. Her latest book is a memoir on aging, Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake, which debuted at number one on The New York Times best-seller list.

Jodi Kantor is a New York Times correspondent and author of the bestseller, The Obamas.

The final simulcast, “God Is One: Moses, Jesus, Muhammad,” will be a panel discussion featuring Bruce Feiler, Omid Safi and Karen King, moderated by Reza Aslan, on Sunday, December 16. Dessert and coffee will be served at 7:45 p.m., and the broadcast begins at 8:15.

Monotheism is a relatively new idea in the history of religions, yet it has become the foundation of the three great western religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Dr. Reza Aslan is an acclaimed scholar of religions and author of the best sellers No God but God and How to Win a Cosmic War. Bruce Feiler is the best-selling author of Walking the Bible and Council of Dads. Omid Safi is a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Karen King is Hollis Professor of Divinity at the Harvard Divinity School.
