In the last 24 hours terrorists in Gaza have fired a barrage of missiles at Israeli towns, causing destruction in all its forms, with three people being killed by an advanced Grad missile in the town of Kiryat Malachi. Israel’s advanced missile defense system, called the “Iron Dome,” has intercepted over 100 of these missiles, preventing further death and destruction. The increasingly advanced rockets of the Gaza terrorists are now threatening as far north as the Tel Aviv suburb of Rishon L’Tzion, where sirens were heard for the first time this afternoon.
In response, Israel continues to pound Gaza from the air, sea, and land, striking over 230 targets made up of terrorist infrastructure, weapons storage facilities, etc. The IDF is reporting that these strikes are very successful, and that more is to come. A limited call up of reservists has been ordered, and the IDF is prepared to launch a ground invasion if necessary.
Both the United States and Great Britain, have affirmed Israel’s right to protect itself and have condemned the terrorist rocket fire. President Obama has been in touch with Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi, in order to attempt to reduce tensions. While Egypt blames only Israel for the current crisis, they do not want to see any escalation of this conflict right on their border, and might be the only nation with a relationship with both Hamas and Israel.
The Jewish Community of Louisville mourns the tragic loss of life, and hopes that peace will return to the region soon and for all.
