Train with Team JCC for the Triple Crown of Running

The JCC is offering members a way to run the winter blues off and train for the Derby City’s favorite foot races.

The Triple Crown Training Program starts Jan. 12 and will feature a full training regime for all levels of runners to prepare for the Louisville Triple Crown of Running – a 5K on Feb. 22, a 10K March 8 and a 10 mile race March 22.

The training will start on January 12 with an informational meeting and short run. Costs range from $60 for a 5k training program to $100 for the 10 mile training program.

Tara Stone, assistant director of membership and wellness, will lead participants on two runs a week – on Sundays and Tuesdays – typically through Seneca and Cherokee parks.

“Our program is an added member benefit for people just starting out or who need motivation to continue training,” Stone said.

This is the first year the JCC has offered a training program specifically for The Triple Crown, but running programs this summer and fall proved there are some passionate runners at the JCC.

“We’ve seen a spike in interest,” Stone said.

Runners don’t have to be in the races to participate in the training program.

But for those who are serious about competing, Stone has run the Triple Crown twice, so she knows what it takes.

“A good training program isn’t just about running,” Stone said.

It will also focus on nutrition, hydration, stretching, cross-training and strengthening. Stone said she encourages runners to incorporate other fitness activities into their training, such as cycling or weight training.

“It strengthens muscles and works different parts of the muscles you don’t necessarily use while running, which helps with endurance,” she said. To register or to learn more, call the Health and Wellness desk at 238-2727.
