More than a hundred people took a swing during the ninth annual Republic Bank Golf Challenge benefiting the Jewish Community Center and Jewish Family and Career Services. This year’s event was especially meaningful with the passing of Bernard Trager, Republic Bank founder and Honorary Golf Challenge Chairman.

For the second consecutive year, the outing was held at Standard Country Club and included a Tennis Challenge, Bridge Tournament and silent auction. While the event was a success, the final amount of money raised is still being calculated.

“I am very proud of this year’s Golf Challenge,” said Golf Challenge Event Chair Doug Roemer. “The weather was almost perfect and it made for an excellent turnout, not only for golf but for Tennis and Bridge as well.”

Before the competitions began, players dined on lunch from Jason’s Deli and warmed up on the driving range and putting green. Dinner was a buffet from the Standard Country Club including bowtie pasta and fried chicken. After dinner the following awards were announced:

Scott Trager, Ron Borinstein, Lee Benovitz and Susan Smith teamed up to win the Golf Challenge. Half of last year’s winning team came in second including Doug Roemer, Gail Pohn, Mike Pearce and Gary Weiss.

Sandy Hensley and Andrew Eiferman won the Tennis Challenge. Marsha Segal and Shellie Benovitz claimed second.

Betty Pohn and Myra Garon won the 2nd Annual Bridge tournament. Ann Blieden and Nancy Shull teamed up for the second prize and Sonia Levine and Jean Trager took third.

Billy Altman and Steve Yards shared the putting contest. Carolyn Weaver took home the prize for Straightest Drive on Hole 2. Carol James won the Longest Drive on hole 4. Gail Pohn was the Closest to the Pin on Hole 7. Susan Smith had a great day from the tee box, winning the Longest Drive on Hole 11 and Straightest Drive on Hole 16. Michael Wood was the Closest to the Pin on Hole 12. Ron Bornstein and Scott Trager had the Longest Putts on Holes 14 and 18 respectively.
