Award Dinner Honoring Jon Fleischaker
October 19, 2017 @ 6:00 pm
Attorney Jon Fleischaker to be honored at award dinner to raise funds for a Family Drug Court.
The Louisville Section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) will bestow its David Richart Award on Kentucky’s premier First Amendment lawyer, Jon Fleischaker, at a benefit dinner Thursday, Oct. 19, at The Temple, 5101 U.S. Hwy. 42. The award is given annually for outstanding service to the welfare of Kentucky’s children. Seats for the dinner start at $250 each and are tax deductible except for $30 each, the cost of the dinner.*
No one has been more successful in championing freedom of the press in Kentucky than Jon Fleischaker. Jon crafted Kentucky’s Open Records and Open Meeting laws. He has been instrumental in helping rural papers fight suppression of news in their areas. Last year, he won an important lawsuit requiring the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to open its records of cases of children who died or were severely injured while under the Cabinet’s supervision.
Proceeds from the dinner will go toward creation of a Family Drug Court in Jefferson County. Similar courts have been successful in the city of New Orleans and the state of Florida. The court would offer rehabilitation, counseling, parenting classes, and other services to drug dependent parents of children who would otherwise be taken away and placed in foster care. The drug epidemic ravaging this community makes the need for such services all the more urgent.
*Tax deductible contributions in Jon Fleischaker’s honor are welcome. Checks should be made out to the Community Foundation of Louisville (CFL), NCJW Light the Way Fund for Families with Addiction and mailed to: NCJW Office, 1250 Bardstown Road, Suite 26, Louisville, KY 40204.
