Joint Synagogue Tisha B’av program at Adath Jeshurun

July 25, 2015 @ 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Adath Jeshurun, Keneseth Israel and Temple Shalom are hosting a shared Tisha B’av observance to be held at Adath Jeshurun, 2401 Woodbourne Avenue, Louisville, KY in the Rabbi Robert B. Slosberg Event Center this evening beginning at 10:00 pm. This event is free and open to the community.

“There are days on the Jewish calendar that are marked for destruction, unlucky days if you will. Tisha B’av became one of them. The destructions of both the First and Second Temples by the Babylonians and Romans in 586 BCE and 70 CE respectively took place on this date, and the rabbis also assumed that the sin of the Golden Calf and the bad report of the spies from the Book of Numbers also took place on the Ninth of Av. Later events in history also seemed to happen around this date including the First Crusade, the expulsions from England, France and Spain.

For centures, the Jewish people have marked this day as the only full fast of the year other than Yom Kippur, refraining from eating, drinking, anointing, bathing, wearing leather shoes for a full 25+ hours, from before sunset on the eve of the commemoration to three stars the following night.

Join us as we create a darkened space to sing the mournful poignant melodies of Jeremiah’s Lamentations, written to commemorate the destruction of the First Temple, which still ring true today”.
