Join the Jewish Louisville Hunger Walk Team

One in eight people in the world go to bed hungry each night.

One in six people in Kentucky suffer food hardship.

You can help put hunger on the run by participating in Dare to Care’s 2014 Hunger Walk, Sunday, September 14. This 37th community hunger walk will begin at 2:15 p.m. at the Belvedere. The 5K (3.1 miles) route for walkers and runners will be enhanced by entertainment including live music.

A Hunger Walk Family Festival, 12-4:30 p.m., will bring added excitement to the event. The Festival will include the Stampede Against Hunger Obstacle Course for children and adults provided by the Stampede Series, a Kids Zone by KaZoing with inflatables, games and more. There will also be musical entertainment, free food and refreshments, and food available for purchase from four of Louisville’s finer food trucks.

Aramark returns for the fifth straight year as the Hunger Walk’s presenting sponsor.

The Jewish community was among the Hunger Walk’s founders, and has always been one of its strong supporters. It was established in response to the death of Bobby Ellis, a nine-year-old boy who died on Thanksgiving Eve in 1969. That movement led to the beginning of Dare to Care over 40 years ago and grew into a movement that formed The Hunger Walk in 1978.

The Jewish Community Relations Council urges members of the Jewish community to sign up as part of the Jewish Louisville team.

Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for youth 18 and under. With online registration, individuals can also seek their own sponsors to increase their impact on the fight against hunger. Registration and more information is available at www.thehungerwalk.org.

The majority of the proceeds go to Dare to Care and other local hunger relief agencies, including JFCS’s Food Pantry, to fight hunger locally. A smaller portion goes to the World Food Program.

Dare to Care food Bank is a local nonprofit agency with a mission to lead the community to feed the hungry and conquer the cycle of need. In 2013, Dare to Care distributed over 16 million pounds of food, including over 5.5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, to those in need in eight Kentucky and five Indiana counties. Dare to Care operates Kids Cafes in neighborhood afterschool locations and Backpack Buddy weekend nutrition programs in 36 Kentuckiana elementary schools.

Dare to Care also operates a Mobile Pantry that brings fresh produce and other nutritious food items to people in isolated pockets of need; through the Patrol Against Hunger program, provides nutritionally balanced food boxes to seniors in need in partnership with the Louisville Metro Police Department; and through Cooking Matters, empowers families with the skills, knowledge and confidence to prepare healthy, affordable meals.
