Women Invited to Meet Bialik at Big Bang Wednesday Event

When the Jewish Community of Louisville’s Women’s Philanthropy Division started planning a special thank-you event, they wanted someone interesting, fun and exciting. Mayim Bialik fits the bill.

“She’s a very funny comedian who’s been on a lot of TV sitcoms,” said event co-chair Linda Schuster, “but she’s also super smart and very spiritual.”

And best of all, Bialik is coming to Louisville for for Big Bang Wednesday on May 11. The event will be at 6:45 p.m. at the Water Tower.

“I can’t wait to hear her story,” Schuster said. “Here’s this fantastic Jewish women who does it all. Not only is she an accomplished actress who lives in L.A. and has been around all these movie stars, but she lives an active Jewish life with her family. She earned her undergraduate degree in neuroscience and Jewish studies and Hebrew and then went on to get a Ph.D. in neuroscience. That’s as good as it gets!”

“I want to encourage all women in the Jewish community to come and meet and talk with Mayim Bialik,” she added. “It will be a really different and fun event.”

This is a thank you event for the women of the community for their support of the Campaign, event co-chair Joy Kaplan explained, and all women in the Jewish community are welcome.

The cost is $25 per person.

Bialik plays Jim Parson’s nerdy, brainy girlfriend on the CBS hit “The Big Bang Theory” and that she played the title role, Blossom Russo, on the older sitcom, “Blossom.”

Bialik’s acting resume also includes the role of the young Bette Midler in “Beaches” and guest roles on some of television’s most beloved shows of the 1980’s and 1990’s, such as “MacGuyver,” “Webster,” “Facts of Life” and “Murphy Brown.” In addition, she appeared in Woody Allen’s “Don’t Drink the Water” in 1994, HBO’s “Fat Actress”, and the HBO comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

A dedicated leader when she was a student at UCLA Hillel, Bialik started and led a Women’s Rosh Chodesh group, chanting and blowing shofar for High Holiday services, and conducting and writing music for UCLA’s Jewish a cappella group.

She is a board member and co-founder and chair of Jewish Free Loan Association’s Genesis branch, and is an avid student of all things Jewish. She is devoted to a lifestyle of attachment parenting, home-schooling, natural family living and vegan cooking.

She continues her Jewish studies weekly independently and through Partners in Torah, keeps a traditional Jewish home and cares for her two boys with her husband.

This will be a thank-you event for the women of the community and will offer those who have not yet had the opportunity to make their commitments to the JCL’s 2011 Campaign to do so.

In addition to Kaplan and Schuster, members of the committee are Julie Ensign, Debbie Hyman, Kat Johnson, Shannon Levine, Robin Miller, Marsha Roth, Beth Salamon Mona Schramko, Kristin Shapira and Shane Shaps.
