Westport Village Hope for Haiti Benefit Planned

The stores and restaurants at Westport Village, located off Westport Road between Herr and Lyndon Lanes, invite you to an evening of shopping and dining on Thursday, March 18, from 6-9 p.m., during which up to 15 percent of the proceeds will be donated to help address poverty and other needs in Haiti, through the Hope for Haiti organization.
The Westport Village Trail Store is collecting new and used tents that evening and will arrange to ship them to Haiti. For more information on the event, contact Suzanne Tiano at 581-8800 or email stiano@uhill.org.

A joint tikkun olam project for Keneseth Israel and Temple Shalom, the local Hope for Haiti Committee was formed last spring with the mission of becoming a model for other cities by reaching across religious, cultural, racial and ethnic barriers to demonstrate that a city can raise a village from poverty to self-sufficiency. Members of the committee include representatives of places of worship, schools and community groups.

The local committee’s first goal is to raise $23,500 to create a purified water supply for Ravine Sable, a rural village in Southern Haiti where a Florida-based Hope for Haiti group supports a school for 350 children. The recent earthquake has made the Louisville committee’s efforts even more important since survivors are migrating en masse to villages such as Ravine Sable, which find themselves severely short of food.

Hope for Haiti also has been assisting Haitians in the earthquake zone and donations can be designated for earthquake relief.
