Mother’s Day should be a happy time for all moms. Unfortunately, many moms are forced to spend this holiday living in community shelters, the victims of domestic abuse or homelessness. For these women, Two Men and a Truck® has initiated Movers for Moms®, a community-based program collecting simple treasures.
Started by Two Men and a Truck Michigan franchisees in 2008, Movers for Moms is expanding to 10 states and more than 55 franchises in 2011. In Louisville, Two Men and a Truck will collect essential items for women staying at Salvation Army Louisville – Center of Hope.
Last year, working with schools across Michigan, Movers for Moms collected more than 20,000 items for women in need on Mother’s Day. This year, Two Men and a Truck will seek to partner with local schools across the country, such as Bright Expectations, to raise more than 50,000 items for women in shelters.
In Louisville, poverty and homelessness is a community crisis. The Salvation Army has served the underprivileged of our own community since 1883. The Army fights for human justice through a social service program called “The Center of Hope.” The primary goal of The Center of Hope Emergency Residential program is to provide homeless people with an alternative to living in the streets or parks, and to help these men and women develop and implement realistic goal plans that lead toward employment, housing, and self-sufficiency.
“Many of our residents are single-parent families, the majority being mothers with young children,” said Matt Yates, director at Center of Hope. “These women have suffered through abuse, discrimination and poverty. They work diligently to see that their children’s needs are met, often at the sacrifice of their own. Movers for Moms should be commended for recognizing the struggles of these women and leading a community effort to provide them with life’s essentials this Mother’s Day.”
In addition to partnering with community schools, Two Men and a Truck welcomes support for Movers for Moms from local businesses and other organizations interested in bringing a smile to the faces of less fortunate women on Mother’s Day. Two Men and a Truck also provides free delivery of commodity foods to residents of Shalom Tower.
