The Ready Set Helps Boomers Make the Most of the Rest of Their Lives

Jewish Family & Career Services (formerly JFVS) launched The Ready Set, a new initiative designed to prepare Baby Boomers entering the next phase of their lives to make the most of the years ahead. Individuals 50+ and older were invited for lively discussions about planning for what’s next in life, achieving goals and getting more out of the future.  Experts in various fields led the conversations and offer advice and assistance to make the most out of the second half of life.

The January 15 2009 session from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Roth Family Center had wine and hors d’oeuvres served in a casual atmosphere. The discussion covered health and wellness issues from the perspective of living a happy and healthy life is about being proactive about your wellness needs.

Mary Glover, MED, MS, ACSM fitness specialist and personal trainer who operates Time Out Fitness, covered “Fitness after 50 – Get Up and Get Active.” Comfortable clothing should be worn for this session.

Collen Engle, CEC,CHE,CFBE, Sullivan University; Katie Payne, CHE, CSC, Sullivan University; and Sandra Meyerowitz, MPH, RD, LD, Nutrition Works; will team up to cover “Diet and Nutrition.” This session will also include a healthy eating cooking demonstration by Sullivan University chefs.

Gracie  S Wishnia, Ph.D, RN, BC (gerontology), Peaceful Families, and professor at Spalding University School of Nursing rounded out the evening with “Sex after 60.”

The fee was$10 per session.

The February 19 session addressed “Career Transitions,” and participants explored how to build on their skills and strengths to discover new employment opportunities.

Michael Gritton, executive director, Kentuckiana Works covered “Recession Proof Careers;” Bob Tiell, director Career Services, JFCS, addressed “Encore Careers;” Cathy Fyock, director of recruiting, Resources Global Professionals, talked about “Human Resources Practices;” Dale Herink, life coach, Sage Advice, focused on “Work-Life Balance” and Jim Oetken, communicator, rounded out the evening with “Successful Retirement.”

The March 5 session will cover “Leisure and Lifelong Learning.” A panel including Suzann O’Koon, PhD, CLC , psychologist and certified life coach; Mauri Malka, LCSW, CMC, director, JFCS Klein Older Adult Services; and Ellen Shapira, MA, NCC, NCCC, JFCS career counselor; covered personal fulfillment and learning to explore opportunities for a happy “rest of your life.” They will cover bucket lists, unfulfilled educational experiences, leaving a legacy, prioritizing interests into meaningful activities and what activities make you happy.
