The next CenterStage production, The Last Five Years, opened at the Jewish Community Center on February 11.
This fresh, contemporary musical from Jason Robert Brown, known for Parade and Songs for a New World, explores the relationship between Jamie Wellerstein (Jeremy Moon), a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt (Jamie Lynn Sutton), a struggling actress.
Described as intoxicating and honest, this song-cycle musical chronicles their five-year relationship – from meeting to break-up or from break-up to meeting – depending on your point of view.
With a storytelling structure, Cathy begins the show at the end of the couple’s marriage and journeys backward to the time they first met; while Jamie starts just after the couple met and moves to their break-up. The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their time-lines intersect.
Performances are scheduled for February 11, 13, 15, 18, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and February 14 and 21 at 2 and 7 p.m. A performance is schedule for February 22 at 7:30 p.m. to make up for a snow cancellation.
