Audition Information

J Arts and Ideas is so excited to be back in person this Fall!

We are audition for CenterStage Mainstage and our Children’s Theatre troupe, Acting Out, that will be performing this Fall and Spring in Kentucky and Southern Indiana schools.

All auditions and Mainstage productions will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 3600 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40205. Acting Out productions will be held at local schools.

CenterStage and Arts Ed auditions and roles are open to all.


CENTERSTAGE

We are looking to audition and cast for our productions as we bid farewell to our “old” space and say hello to our NEW space in the Trager Family JCC! 

Our typical rehearsal schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 7:00-10:00; Sunday 4:00-9:00 pm

Not all actors will be called at each rehearsal. Conflicts are required at the start of the rehearsal process in order to make the best use of everyone’s time.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Time Commitment

  • Rehearsals: August 15-September 25
  • Performances: September 30, October 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10
  • Strike is mandatory for all cast members: Sunday, October 10
  • At this time we will only be casting for adult roles for this show. 

Character Breakdown

JOSEPH: Male, Tenor – Eleventh and favorite son of Jacob. Confident and charming. Vocally strong.

NARRATORS: Male or Female, Tenor or Soprano – The audience’s guides through the story. The narrators tell Joseph’s story with word and song. Can command the stage while directing focus to story elements. Strong singers with great energy.

PHARAOH: Male or Female, Baritone or Mezzo – Egypt’s ruler, considered a god on earth. Searching for the meaning behind his/her dreams. Portrayed as a world-famous rock star. Full of energy and confidence.

POTIPHAR: Male, Baritone – Rich, self-indulgent, and sophisticated Egyptian capitalist. Makes Joseph the leader of his household. Strong character actor with a powerful speaking voice.

MRS. POTIPHAR: Female, Alto – Indulgent and confident in her pursuit of what she wants, which, at this time, happens to be Joseph.

JACOB: Male, Baritone – Aged father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. Strong character actor who can sing and move well.

BUTLER: Male or Female, Tenor or Mezzo – Pharaoh’s right hand. While in jail, Joseph interprets the Butler’s dreams to a positive outcome.

BAKER: Male or Female, Tenor or Mezzo – Head of Pharaoh’s kitchen. While in jail, Joseph interprets the Baker’s dreams to a less-than-positive outcome.

JOSEPH’S BROTHERS: Male, Various Ranges – Jealous of Joseph being their father’s favorite son. Skilled dancers and singers.

WIVES: Female, Various Ranges – The wives of Joseph’s brothers. Skilled moved and singers.

ENSEMBLE: Male and Female, Various Ranges – Actors, singers, and dancers serving as Ishmaelites, Egyptians, Canaanites, and other characters within Joseph’s story.

Falsettos

Time Commitment

  • Rehearsals: September 26-November 6
  • Performances: November 11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21
  • Strike is mandatory for all cast members: Sunday, November 21

Character Breakdown

MARVIN: (Baritone, low A to E, light dancing, 35 – 45) Marvin is trying to find himself while being married to a woman and yet, bisexual. He can be selfish and yet jealous; confused, yet needy.

WHIZZER BROWN: (Tenor, low Bb to G, light dancing, 20 – 40) Marvin’s young, sexually active lover who is not used to being in a committed relationship. He eventually contracts AIDS.

MENDEL: (Baritone, Bb to high C#, intense dancing, 30 – 50) The smart, quirky, and kind family psychiatrist who has a crush on Trina.

JASON: (Tenor, low G to E, light dancing, 9 – 14) Marvin’s confused son.

TRINA: (Mezzo, low A to E, light dance, 30 – 45) Marvin’s slightly naïve, nervous, and forgiving wife. She has a crush on Mendel.

CHARLOTTE: (Mezzo, low B to bE, light dance, 30 – 55) Cordelia’s lesbian lover who is concerned about both Marvin and Whizzer. She is serious and yet loving.

CORDELIA: (Soprano, low A to bE, Light Dance, 30 – 55) Charlotte’s devoted lesbian lover. She is a good friend to many and always wants to keep people happy.


ACTING OUT

We are seeking agile, creative, and collaborative artists who sing and move well. Actors must have daytime availability in order to participate in rehearsals and performances.

We are also needing to fill our A/V Tech position. This person must have knowledge of and experience using sound equipment for a small group of actors. This person will be setting up and tearing down equipment, storing equipment, running sound check and all sound responsibilities for school performances. This person must have daytime availability in order to participate in rehearsals and performances.

All positions are compensated with rehearsal stipends and per/performance fees.

Beautiful Yetta

Performances begin in October 2021 and are booked by schools and scheduled around actor availability.

Character Breakdown

Yetta, beautiful Yetta, manages to escape from the butcher’s shop. But now she is lost in Brooklyn―a strange place filled with rude rats and dangerous buses!

We are looking for four strong actors, singers, and movers with great energy to embody every character in this wild tale! This story will come to life for our young audiences on many stages throughout Kentuckiana schools.

Maddi’s Fridge

Character Breakdown

Best friends Sofia and Maddi live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, and play in the same park, but while Sofia’s fridge at home is full of nutritious food, the fridge at Maddi’s house is empty. Sofia learns that Maddi’s family doesn’t have enough money to fill their fridge and promises Maddi she’ll keep this discovery a secret. But because Sofia wants to help her friend, she’s faced with a difficult decision: to keep her promise or tell her parents about Maddi’s empty fridge.

We are seeking four strong actors, singers, and movers to tell this delicate story in a warm, honest way for our young patrons.
