Chess Camps

Week 1 (Grades 2-6): June 7-11

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

Learn the basics of chess with Coach Corbin – the West Louisville Chess Club’s senior coach and recruiter. Coach Corbin says, his students never lose: they win or they learn! This is his coaching philosophy…we never lose, we win or we learn! Campers will learn from Coach Corbin in the mornings and enjoy our traditional camp activities in the afternoons.

Cooking Camps with Mesa Cooking School

Week 1 – Cake Decorating (Grades 2-6): June 7-11

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

Campers will learn to design, frost, decorate, and embellish their very own cake. This year’s theme is unicorns. Unicorns are rare and beautiful creatures, just like us! This class will cover making icing, fondant work, chocolate work, the basics of icing a cake, decorating strategy, and personal creativity. Each camper will imagine and create a unicorn design that reflects their interests, hobbies, favorite colors, heroes, etc. at the end of the week, campers will take home their cakes for their families.

Week 2 – Chopped (Grades 3-6): June 14-18

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

This camp is all about the competition! Campers will be divided into teams, given recipes and ingredients while instructors guide each team through their recipes and cooking techniques. Each day of camp will begin a new competition with new prizes to be won. Campers will encounter mystery and sabotage ingredients to learn to navigate through unexpected trouble in the kitchen. This is meant to make the competition more fun and encourage teamwork, higher learning, and problem solving. Each day, teams will be judged on taste, proper cooking techniques, plating and design, teamwork, and sanitation (working clean and tidy). Campers will be encouraged to work creatively, think outside the box, and have fun while learning basic cooking techniques, flavor profiles and development, and artistic expression through food.

Week 3 – Growing and Cooking (K-6): June 21-25

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

Campers explore growing vegetables and edible plants and the importance of living healthy while creating dishes that are colorful and nutritious. Each day, we will make farm to table dishes while using ingredients from local farmers markets. Campers will also plant a microgreen garden to tend at camp and at home.

Week 4 – Tasty Tales (K-3): June 28-July 2

This class is geared towards younger campers; however this camp can be enjoyed by campers of all ages. We will explore making dishes featured in fairy tales, folk songs, and storybooks. Some of the stories we will discover are Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Dragons Love Tacos, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, etc.

Week 5 – Pasta Camp (K-6): July 6-9

$205 JCC members,  $235 non-members

Campers will learn to make a basic pasta dough and transform it into a plethora of pasta shapes, colors, and flavors. Spaghetti, fettuccini, farfalle, gnocchi, ravioli, tortellini, campanelle, and cannelloni are some of the shapes and dishes campers will learn to master this week! Over the course of 4 days, campers will make ~10 handmade shapes and also learn to use a pasta machine. Campers will also learn to make sauces to accompany pastas. We will also be learning to make colored/flavored pasta, vegan, whole wheat, and traditional pasta doughs.

Week 6 – Cupcake Wars (K-6): July 12-16

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

Each day, campers will be divided in to teams to participate in competition. Each team will be given recipes for cupcakes and icings, as well as ingredients for decoration. Instructors will teach the campers the fundamentals of baking and decorating while encouraging campers to work as a team to get creative with their team’s cupcakes. Instructors will also have mystery ingredients to teach campers how to substitute and incorporate ingredients in a recipe. Each day of camp, the campers will be judged on their cupcake taste, design, teamwork, use of mystery ingredient, and sanitation (working clean, tidy, and sanitary), and the winning team will receive a prize. Campers will enjoy their cupcakes after the competition each day.

Week 7 – Food Science (K-6): July 19-23

Food Science camp will focus on chemical reactions in the kitchen. Campers will do food-related experiments, prepare recipes, and study the chemical reactions behind the results. Campers will bake bread, make popcorn, ice cream, candy, and more to observe and learn the chemical properties and their reactions when combined with other chemicals, heated, and chilled. Campers will study ingredients at each state of solid, liquid, and gas; experiment with viscous liquids; and learn about water displacement, density, and emulsification. Campers will learn to make their own batteries using fruits and vegetables.

Week 8 – Cookie Craze (K-6): July 26-30

Campers will bulk up their recipe books with 15 different cookie recipes. We will explore classic cookie baking like chocolate chip, sugar, snickerdoodles, etc, and travel the globe while trying cookie recipes from around the world. Nut-free class.

Snapology Camps

Week 1 – Intro to Robotics (K-2): June 7-11

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

Campers will explore the world of robotics as they build and code moving, LEGO® based models. They will also learn to think critically about their surroundings and realize all the simple machines they use every day. Whether learning about sensors building drills and magic wands, or discovering how gears create movement in helicopters and robotic dogs, your camper is sure to have a great time! Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 2 – Superheroes (K-5): June 14-18

To the Batcave fans! Comic books and movies bring together great stories and characters, and we will create both in this popular camp. Using LEGO® bricks, campers will design their own superhero, create exciting adventures and build cool new superhero sets. Your campers will have a blast creating their own fantasy world of superheroes! What kind of super powers will they discover? Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 3 – Creature Creator Robotics (K-5): June 21-25

In Creature Creator Robotics, your animal lover will create their own animal-inspired robotic models, while learning about some of the traits and characteristics of their favorite creatures. Campers will learn about coding, motors, sensors and simple machines as they build insects, dolphins, gorillas and much more. Your camper is sure to have a wild time as they build, learn and play! Campers will get to take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 4 – Castles, Kingdoms & Wizards (K-5): June 28-July 2

Combine the endless fun of LEGO® with the magical world of castles & wizards! Campers will have fun learning about and creating castles, dragons, knights and swords, using LEGO® bricks and much more. Let the magical adventure begin! Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 5 – Scientists with Slime! (K-5): July 6-9

$205 JCC members,  $235 non-members

Campers will cultivate their love of science and nature through hands-on creation and experimentation. We will engage in concepts from astronomy, earth science, biology, chemistry and physics using LEGO® bricks and other interactive learning tools. On the last day, campers will have a blast making slime, while learning about the science behind their favorite slimy polymer and how the magic is all in the ingredients. Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 6 – Escape! (K-5): July 12-16

In this exciting new camp, campers and their teams will have 45 minutes to discover clues, solve puzzles, answer riddles and manipulate contraptions to complete the assigned tasks and ultimately unlock the box to escape Snapology! Using math and critical thinking skills, campers will have to work together to succeed in earning the ultimate bragging rights…until their record is beaten by a new team! Campers will get to take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 7 – Amusement Park Adventure (Grades 2-8): July 19-23

Campers will design and build their own amusement park in this thrilling program! We will learn how to use LEGO® bricks, motors and other building materials to make our favorite coasters and other awesome rides. By the last day, each team will be ready to create their own unique ride, and then we’ll bring everything together – complete with food and game shops! Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 8 – Adventures with Star Wars (K-5): July 26-30

If your camper loves Star Wars®, this is the camp for them! Campers will have a great time in this week filled with Star Wars® themed activities using LEGO® bricks and other interactive learning tools. We will explore concepts such as engineering strong spacecraft and structures while building scenes from the movies, favorite ships and lightsabers. May the force be with them! Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

Week 9 – Pokemania (K-5): August 2-6

Campers will explore and build the world of Pokémon® as they create their own gyms, battles and even their very own generation of Pokémon®. We will also learn about real world science while exploring their habitats and traits. Your camper will have a blast exercising their imagination and becoming the best Pokémon® trainer ever! Campers will get to build and take home their own LEGO® mini-figure at the end of this camp.

STEAM Camps

Week 2 – Sew Crafty (Grades 3-5): June 14-18

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

This is a two part camp. First, campers will learn how to sew creatures and other fantastical characters out of felt and fabric! No sewing experience required. You will learn a variety of sewing stitches and you’ll get to make a variety of stuffed animals/creatures. Second, campers will create several pieces of wearable jewelry. Projects will include using perler beads and shrinky dinks to make necklaces, key chains, and earrings. Anyone who signs up will get a sewing kit and they will get to keep all of their creations.

Week 3 – Medieval Mania (Grades 2-4): June 21-25

Do you like castles, knights, and all things medieval? Then this is your camp! You’ll learn a little about Viking culture, writing, and you will build and decorate Viking swords, shields and helmets. We will also learn about medieval England through constructing castles, drawing family crests, and decorating play weapons. We will also have a castle siege competition where you build catapults so you can attack your opponent’s fortress!

Week 6 – Science Olympics (Grades 2-4): July 12-16

Calling all academic-athletes to compete in the Science Olympics! In this camp you will be designing and building boats, helicopters, rockets, and cars. Each camper will get to test and improve their designs throughout the week of camp. Some days may be all about the process, while on other days you will produce cool projects to take home. The best performing and most original designs will earn campers the gold!

Week 7 – Video Games & ‘Mine Crafts’ (Grades 2-4): July 19-23

$255 JCC members,  $295 non-members

In this class we will focus on crafts related to classic video games and Minecraft. For Minecraft we will build blocks and weapons out of cardstock, cardboard, and tape. We will also create your favorite classic video game characters like Mario and Zelda out of Perler beads, and cardstock. Crafty gamers are welcome!
