On Monday, February 24, 2014 officials at Jewish Hospital hosted an open house and media tour to unveil the new hybrid operating room (OR), on the second floor of the Rudd Heart and Lung Center. The new facility, that will open soon, offers significant technological advancements and capabilities that will benefit patient care.
A hybrid operating room combines a full traditional operating room, with a full cath lab, plus a high-end imaging system, which allows for ultrasound, 2D and 3D images during endovascular procedures and other procedures. The room is equipped with one of the newest robot supported imaging systems. Procedures are performed in close collaboration between cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons and cardiologists to ensure the optimal outcome for the patient. The hybrid operating room approach decreases morbidity, reduces risk of infection and results in shorter intensive care stay and fewer complications. The staff is excited about the new hybrid OR’s capabilities.
“This is one of the latest innovations in surgery and vascular procedures,” said Mark Slaughter, M.D., executive director of cardiovascular services for the KentuckyOne Health Louisville market and chair of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Louisville. “It brings together many physicians to work on the same patient, at the same time, in the same place. The result is an improved patient outcome.”
The hybrid OR was funded by the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation. “This is just another example of innovation at Jewish Hospital,” said Sherri Craig, executive director, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation. “It’s taken a wide variety of generous donors from across the community to make this happen.”
