As always we have a great need for SOUPS, household and warm winter items!
1) Be a JFCS/Temple Shalom Hanukkah Helper! Deadline: Nov 15. New clothes and accessories are needed for Jewish children in Louisville. Call Judy Tiell at JFCS, 452-6341 for gift list. Always collecting food!
2) PROJECT WARM needs November volunteers to winterize homes for the elderly. Please contact Frank Schwartz, 636-9276 or www.projectwarm.org.
3) Prepare and serve dinner to 60 residents at Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter in association with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Nov 15. Could serve lunch on Nov 21 too. A great group or multi-family option. ((PLEASE NOTE: THE DATE OF THIS EVENT WAS CHANGED FROM NOV 18 to NOV 15. THE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO NOV 15)
4) Gilda’s Club: Volunteer at this free community Cancer support group in Highlands. RSVP with Jenn Morris, 371-3051. Temple WRJ hopefully sponsoring a December dinner for 60, contact Sandy Braunstein, 423-1818 to help.
5) Be an Elf! Wrap gifts for residents of Brooklawn Children’s Home. Dec 9, 2-4 p.m. and Dec 10, 10 a.m.-12 noon & 12 noon-2 p.m. Just bring scissors. (6-7 volunteers each shift) 2125 Goldsmith Lane.
6) Wellspring’s “Concord House” Holiday Brunch for 8 women successfully managing their lives and mental illnesses Dec 12, 1-2:30 p.m., These ladies LOVE US! Amy has gift list. (Several of these ladies have health problems and could use frozen, single serving homemade soups –I’ll deliver). 3337 Breckinridge Lane.
7) Schuhman Center Food Baskets Dec 13 & 14, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. We would like 5-7 volunteers please. Assemble food baskets at Christ Church Cathedral at Second & Liberty Street.
8) Cathedral of the Assumption Soup Kitchen Dec 22, 24, 26 & 27, 10:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Serve Lunch! 5 volunteers per shift. Need 15 doz. cookies per shift. Ages 12 and up. (You can arrange times 365 days a year!) 443 S. Fifth Street.
9) Dedication of our 2010 Habitat for Humanity House join us at 2925 Dumesnil on December. Date to be announced.
10) Donate to OR SHALOM Israeli agency helping Israeli orphans. Contact Rabbi David at 423-1818
11) Make 500 Sandwiches for St Vincent DePaul at The Temple. Dec 24, 1 p.m. Call Rabbi David, 423-1818 to RSVP and for food assignment. Meet at The Temple Kitchen.
12) Hospice Musicians Dec 24, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Your beautiful music is a wonderful gift. Pick your time to play at 6th floor of the downtown Norton Hosparus Pavilion.
13) Home of the Innocents Dec 26, 10 a.m. Read to and bake cookies with residents. 1100 East Market Street.
14) Center for Women and Families: Provide and serve soup and salad for 60 residents. Dec 26, 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Also collecting diapers of all sizes, pull-ups and wipes! 927 South Second Street.
15) Four Courts Senior Center Holiday BINGO Dec 26, 1:45-3 p.m. Followed by a Peppermint Ice Cream Social! Family activity! 2100 Millvale Road.
16) Ronald McDonald House: Provide and serve brunch for about 35 residents. Dec 24, 10 a.m.-12 noon. Families welcome. 550 South First Street.
17) St. Vincent DePaul Open Hand Kitchen: Serve lunch. Dec 23 or 24, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. 6 volunteers each shift, must be ~16 years old. A great experience! 1026 South Jackson Street.
18) Homeless adults need NEW SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR! Coats, blankets scarves, gloves, toboggans distributed by Coalition for the Homeless. New immigrants need household items. Boxes at JCC and Temple lobbies.
19) Brunch at Maryhurst Dec 26. This is a Temple Shalom coordinated event. Please contact Kathy Fields. Located on Dorsey Lane.
20) Ardery & Journey Houses: Provide gifts and Pizza Party for 10 residents at each of these Wellspring Houses. Wellspring provides support for people with mental illnesses.
21) Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter Option One: Dec 24 & 26, All Day: Play with children and volunteer in the NEW play room. Option Two: Dec 26, 5 p.m. Serve (and perhaps sponsor?) dinner. GREAT family or group event! 1321 South Preston Street.
22) Catholic Charities Rescue Agency: (a federally funded agency serving all denominations) helps immigrants from 40 countries. They hope you will “Adopt-A-Family” (250 families each year). Responsibilities would be a new outfit and toy for each child in the family. Call early to ADOPT! They urgently need ALL LINENS, towels, pots and pans, kitchenware, children’s mittens, caps, gloves and scarves, plus laundry and new home set up baskets. Drop off at The Temple. Call Amy or contact Chris Clements at Catholic Charities, 636-9263 x145. On-going volunteers are needed 2 hours per week to tutor or watch the babies while parents are tutored!
23) Get involved with the West End School! This boarding school for boys is providing intense structure, nurture and education for middle school boys and needs volunteers to make/serve meals, arrange and build their Library, build more dormitories, tutor or teach. Many opportunities exist for YOU to make this school a success. Contact Amy Trager (for their WISH List and info), Sandra Trager (for cooking) or Amy Benovitz. A wonderful location and environment!
