Rain couldn’t keep spirits down on May 16, when more than 450 people turned out at Temple Shalom for the KlezmerFest 2010.
The River City Klezmer Band started the freilach concert at 1, starting the festivities with a local touch. The Cincinnati Klezmer Project then turned up the heat with mandolin, clarinet, guitar and vocals that danced around the room and got people moving.
The new local group, The Lost Tribe, provided an energetic interlude and The Java Jews of Des Moines, IA, with guest appearances by Cantors David Lipp and Sharon Hordes wrapped up the three-hour extravaganza with an encore performance that had lines of people snaking around the room dancing and celebrating.
There was plenty of food, and the youngest concert goers had games and contests to entertain them. There was even a PJ Library Ice Cream Social for children up to age 6.
Organizer Kathy Karr promises that this was the first annual Temple Shalom KlezmerFest, and expects next year the weather will cooperate so the celebration can be outside and many more people can come and enjoy.
