KI Wins Schecter Gold Award from USCJ

Keneseth Israel has received a Solomon Schecter “Sollie” Gold Award in Family Education from the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism. The letter from USCJ letter says in part, “… these coveted awards are presented only to kehillot [congregations] that have demonstrated excellence in programming, organization, education and/or administration … they are a source of pride not only to the communities themselves but to all of United Synagogue as well … we greatly appreciate your efforts, which will serve as a model for other USCJ kehillot.”

Shabbat around the World was conceived by and is entirely locally produced by Keneseth Israel. It is all part of K.I.’s philosophy of standing out by offering unique programs and events.

The quarterly Friday evening programs show how Shabbat is observed in foreign countries. K.I. members and their guests are issued passports, tickets and enjoy a full course dinner based on the foods that would be served in whatever country is being toured. Their tour guides are foreign-born K.I. members who bring their memories and family artifacts all the while telling their stories of Friday evenings and their journeys to American citizenship.  A sampling of the countries already “toured” includes Ecuador, Mexico, Morocco and Russia.

The entire Louisville community is always invited to Shabbat Around the World programs.  Check Community’s “Around Town” column or ask any K.I. member for information.
