Congregation Keneseth Israel is Louisville’s “Family Shul” that creates a “Your Home for Shalom” atmosphere.

Its roots go back to 1882 and downtown Louisville. Founded in Orthodoxy, it has evolved into a fully egalitarian Conservative shul. That evolution has allowed Keneseth to keep Judaism’s traditions intact while recognizing the needs of its growing membership in 5773 and beyond.

Distinguished by its landmark stained glass windows, Keneseth Israel offers the community clergy, members and programs to meet their social, educational and spiritual needs.

Morning minyan services on Sundays and legal holidays begin at 8:30. Services on Mondays and Thursdays begin at 7:30.  Evening minyans are at 5:45.  Friday evening services begin at 6:00; Shabbat morning services begin at 9:30.

Youth Groups

Keneseth Israel hosts combined youth groups with Adath Jeshurun: USY (United Synagogue Youth) for high school students, Kadima for middle-schoolers and a Shalom Club for 4th and 5th graders.

College age students receive holiday appropriate gift packages three times each year through K.I.S.H.K.A. (Keneseth Israel Student Holiday Gift Association).

Socialize

The congregation continually strives to provide for members’ religious and social needs. On Friday evenings, before Kabbalat Shabbat services, members and guests enjoy fun appetizers (child and adult versions) and socialize.  In addition, the congregation hosts special holiday celebrations: Havdalah programs; a Derby lunch; an annual meeting and installation; yard sales and Friday night Family Shabbat dinners.

Sisterhood and Men’s Club

The synagogue also has a very active Sisterhood and Men’s Club.  The Sisterhood sponsors the Gift Shop and the annual Mother’s Day Brunch, and co-sponsors the Passover Seder and many other programs.  The Men’s Club sponsors the annual Father’s Day Picnic Passover wine tasting, Chili Bingo, Championship Softball and bowling as well as many other social, religious and educational programs throughout the year.

Missions to Israel

The congregation was fortunate to receive a grant from the Jewish Community of Louisville’s Foundation for Planned Giving for its Passport to Israel fund, which helps pay for student trips to Israel.
