Kehila, the middle school Sunday program for members of Adath Jeshurun, Keneseth Israel and Temple Shalom, recognizes that an important part of becoming adults in the Jewish community is making tikkun olam and tzedakah projects an important part of life.
So when the earthquake hit Haiti in January, Kehila’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders decided to raise money to help those in the devastated country. The students baked and sold hamantaschen for Purim, sold chocolate bars, made and sold beaded bracelets, and on the last day of class, spent much of their time washing cars rather than enjoying the end of school picnic.
Through their efforts, they raised $550, which they donated to Hope for Haiti, the joint Keneseth Israel/Temple Shalom tikkun olam project that provided some emergency assistance in the earthquake ravaged areas and will construct a safe water supply for the village of Ravine Sable.
