More and more families in Kentuckiana are unable to afford the food they need to avoid hunger and lead a healthy life. With requests for food assistance continuing to increase at an unprecedented pace, community leaders are calling on the community to unite behind the 34th Annual Hunger Walk on Sunday, September 18.
The Jewish Community of Louisville is continuing to support the Hunger Walk as a sponsor, and this year, JCL’s Jewish Community Relations Council Director Matt Goldberg encourages everyone to join the Jewish Louisville team.
Aramark is the presenting sponsor. Major sponsors include Kroger, Fifth Third Bank, LG&E, and Yum! Brands. Joining this year’s event for the first time are LG&E and Ford Motor Company.
The Hunger Walk began as Kentuckiana’s first public issue Walk in 1978. Today, it is organized by Dare to Care Food Bank and Interfaith Paths to Peace with 75 percent of the net proceeds going to Dare to Care and 25 percent to the World Food Program.
The 2011 Hunger Walk will start at 2:15 p.m. at Louisville Waterfront Park’s Festival Plaza and follow a certified 5K course into downtown Louisville, across the Clark Memorial Bridge, returning to Festival Plaza.
Join the Jewish Louisville team by registering at www.thehungerwalk.org. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for youths who register by September 15. Choose “Jewish Louisville” for your team! Fees increase by $10 after the date. There are awards for the top runners in several age groups.
The Hunger Walk Festival, featuring food, refreshments, youth activities by KaZoing, and entertainment, will run from 12:30-4 p.m. the day of the event.
Dare to Care Food Bank is a local nonprofit agency with a mission to lead the community to feed the hungry and conquer the cycle of need. In the past 12 months, Dare to Care distributed over 12 million meals to nearly 200,000 different people across Kentuckiana. Dare to Care also operates 12 Kids Cafes in neighborhood afterschool locations and Backpack Buddy weekend nutrition programs in 32 Kentuckiana elementary schools.
