Family Mitzvah Event
The next Family Mitzvah Event will be held Sunday, November 21, at JFCS from 1:30-3 p.m. Together, families will celebrate Hanukah by performing wonderful mitzvahs that will include making crafts projects for Four Courts, helping unload the truck with all of the “Hanukah Helpers” gifts, organizing those gifts in the JFCS boardroom and creating Hanukah food bags for each family. Each family participating is asked to bring a box of latke mix, a jar of applesauce and a small bag of Hanukah gelt. Please RSVP to Shelley Kahn at ext. 103 or skahn@jfcslouisville.org
Two FREE Mini-Workshops on Holiday Tips for Job Seekers
Don’t hibernate during the holidays. Rejuvenate your job search. Workshops are scheduled on November 29 and December 6, from 10:30 a.m.–12 noon at JFCS to re-launch your job search. The holiday season is actually one of the best times to search for a new career opportunity. Attend the workshop to learn why and how to do it. Beers for Careers Networking
JFCS and YPAL present a fun event to kick off the holiday job hunt with a networking event at Browning’s Brewery & Restaurant, 401 E. Main (use the Park Place entrance). The event will be held December 2 from 5-7 p.m. There is a $10 pre-registration cover charge that includes three 7 oz. beer pours and appetizers. The cost is $15 at the door. Issues Affecting Older Adults
The Klein Older Adult Services will host two programs in December:
December 8 – Peter Pearlman, M.S., F-AAA, will speak on hearing loss and the advancement in hearing devices at 12:45 p.m. in the Jewish Community Center Senior Lounge.
December 15 – Brandi Campbell, Hosparus, will speak on end of life issues from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2501 Rudy Lane.

911 Personal Health Record and Property Documentation Cards Available at JFCS
In a medical emergency, the 911 Medical ID Card documents all of your medical information, including doctor’s contact information, prescriptions, allergies, insurance and more. The 911 My Property eSafe Card documents all of your household possessions, protecting your family from financial disaster in case of fire, theft and natural disasters. The USB cards are the size of a credit card and cost only $40 per card, with $16.99 benefiting JFCS. Help us and yourself at the same time.

JFCS Food Pantry Items Needed

PALS Drivers Needed
Make a huge difference in the life of a senior. Drive “one ride” a month with the PALS program. JFCS will work with your schedule.
Employment Advisory Committee – Volunteers Needed
Human Resources volunteers are needed for the JFCS Employment Advisory Committee, which will meet monthly to provide advice and expertise regarding job search, employment, career transitioning issues and assist clients to more effectively to reach their employment goals. Shabbos Friends Needed
Share the joys of the Sabbath with Jewish residents at one nursing facility just once a month. As a volunteer, you will be provided with electric candlesticks, fresh challah and grape juice and will visit that facility on the 3rd Friday of each month. Training will be provided. JFCS Multicultural Department Mentors Needed
As part of the Multicultural Department at JFCS, mentors are needed to work with individuals during the early stages of opening a small new business.
While clients attend mandatory business planning classes, mentors meet with them separately to help transform what is learned in class into a readable written plan and assist with the basic tasks required to get a small business up and running. To sustain these individuals, ongoing support of business professionals and experienced entrepreneurs is needed. Volunteers can use their skills to directly impact the economic opportunities that offer clients a chance to help build assets to sustain a family.
Requirements: a business background is needed, must attend a volunteer orientation including a criminal record check and must meet with the Multicultural staff for training, prior to mentorship.

Senior Concierge Service
Through this program, a care manager works with older adults and family members to provide the needed support to maintain safety, comfort and peace of mind. Services include personal care and grooming, meal planning and preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, socialization and activity and respite. JFCS Older Adult Counselors evaluate and monitor the plan for care and communicate with the family. Whether it’s 24/7 care or just a few hours a week, JFCS’ dedicated caregivers provide the quality of service deserved. Contact Mauri Malka at ext. 250 for an appointment.
Options for the Mature Worker
JFCS provides free career counseling for adults 60 and over who are contemplating changing careers, exploring post-retirement careers or need help with basic job search skills. To make an appointment or for more information, contact Ellen Shapira at ext. 225.
Affordable Homecare for Seniors
The JFCS Homecare Opportunities Program (HOP), funded by a grant from the Weinberg Foundation, can provide non-medical homecare aides for seniors at a reduced cost. To see if you qualify, contact Mauri Malka at ext. 250 or Helen Hord at ext. 226.
Affordable Transportation for Senior Adults
Passport Around Louisville Service (PALS) assists senior adults in need of transportation or help with general errands. To schedule a driver, contact Shelley Kahn at ext. 103.
Anonymous Help Phone Line
The Klempner Center provides preventative educational programs for children and teens and community educational seminars and workshops on topics related to addictions. An anonymous phone line has been established for the Jewish community that is answered by a Jewish person in a 12-step recovery program. This person will direct you to a program that provides help. Call 727-9287 and leave a message. Your phone call will be returned quickly, and you can get help for yourself or a loved one. Jews in the community do have problems with alcoholism, drug abuse, overeating, gambling and other addictions. Jews in the community also are members of 12-step recovery programs. To get help, call the number above.
Support Groups and Workshops
Job Seekers Resource Group
The Job Seekers Resource Group will meet Mondays, October 4-November 8, from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Participants can learn basic job search skills from an experienced career advisor. There is a $10 one-time materials fee. For more information contact Jamie Goodpaster ext. 313.
A.C.T. Preparation Workshop
A.C.T. Preparation Workshop classes will meet at JFCS on Mondays and Tuesdays, November 15-December 7, from 7-9 p.m. The workshop fee is $170 and includes two textbooks. For more information and to register, call Janet at 452-6341 ext. 222.
Caregiver Support Groups
Caregiver support groups help adult children of aging parents learn about community resources and ways to balance their needs with those of aging relatives. One group meets at JFCS every fourth Thursday at 7 p.m. Contact Mauri Malka at ext. 250.
Diabetes Support Group
Individuals with diabetes can talk about living with this chronic condition and share the ways they cope. The Diabetes Support Group meets the third Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. Contact Jenny Schinke ext. 307.
Grandparent/Relative Caregiver Resource Groups
A support group for anyone raising grandchildren or other relatives meets at Cochran Elementary, 500 W. Gaulbert St., every fourth Thursday for a meal at 5:30 p.m. Group meeting is at 6 p.m. Childcare is available. Call Jo Ann Kalb at ext. 335 to RSVP for childcare and meal.
Another support group for anyone raising grandchildren or other relatives meets at JFCS, every third Monday at 2 p.m. Call Jo Ann Kalb at ext. 335 to RSVP or if you need further information.
Emergency Financial Needs
General Help
Food Pantry – providing perishable and non-perishable foods and Kroger gift cards, funded in part by the Sonny and Janet Meyer Family Food Pantry Fund.
One-time emergency financial assistance (limited availability).
JFCS counselors will meet with you to explore resources that may be of help.
Help with payments for non-medical home care, prescriptions, assistive devices, transportation or medically required foods for seniors.
Unemployment Help at JFCS
If you have concerns about your job or are unemployed, contact JFCS and join the Job Seekers Resource group or drop in to the KentuckianaWorks One-Stop Job Resource Center that is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at JFCS.
