Jewish Community to Co-Sponsor Habitat for Humanity ICE House 2011

[by Amy Benovitz]

Since 2000, our Jewish Community has been the sponsor or co-sponsor of nine Habitat for Humanity homes in Louisville. Many of you have enthusiastically volunteered to hammer, saw, paint, donate money, make lunches and mingle in our interfaith attempts to build relationships and homes in our community. I am thrilled to report we are back with Jim Richey as our team leader for ICE HOUSE 2011 (Interfaith Community Effort).

Jim has been spearheading rehabs instead of building from the ground up, but I jumped at the chance for us to work with him and Scott Calvert, St. Francis in the Fields and other local Episcopal Churches and the Lutheran Community again. In fact, the Habitat family volunteer is Gladys Troidl, who has been involved in a prior build. Working with Jim was always wonderful, and I know our volunteers will be excited to rekindle our relationship with him!

Our homeowner is Alonte Brock, and our house is in a nice neighborhood, 111 S. 41 St. (go out Market Street and turn right on 41st!).  We are starting early: June 17-18, which means teens over 16 can volunteer this summer or be in charge of lunches. As a rehab project, we only need about 5 volunteers each day so RSVP early.

As usual our sponsorship includes a financial commitment, (we are hoping for $8,000) and wanted to remind our community that donations to Habitat ICE HOUSE make wonderful Mother’s Day, graduation, and confirmation gifts.

A Naming sponsorship is available too!  Habitat for Humanity offers low-income families a “hand up not a hand out.” Stable home environments result in improved self-esteem and improved learning for the children.

House sponsors guarantee half the cost of building materials and our group’s fee is about $38,000. Please help us reach our goal and contact Amy Benovitz 425-0373 or send checks for Habitat ICE House 2011 to me @ 6100 Innes Trace  40222.

Thank you for making homeownership a reality for another Louisville family.
