The Gendler Grapevine Fresh Stop Market at The Trager Family JCC is an exciting project that addresses food justice and food insecurity in The Trager Family JCC neighborhood. Fresh Stop Markets, run by New Roots, allow shareholders to sign up for a biweekly share of 10 types of local, organic produce sourced from a network of over 50 Kentuckiana farms. The shares are ordered in advance so that community organizers can ensure fair prices for the farmers. New Roots is offering automatic, recurring payments using debit/credit/e-check/SNAP Benefits. Registrations will open up around February to sign up for your share.
Here is how it works: You have two choices. You can choose to pay all at once upfront, right now, for every share (11 times over 22 weeks). You can choose $12, $25 or $40 priced shares, according to income. The sliding scale is loaded into the system for you to see when you click on the photo of the veggies. If you are able to use SNAP Benefits, New Roots offers $6 shares that is matched (with $6) with a federal grant through the Kentucky Double Dollars grant. So, instead of paying $12, SNAP Benefit shares are now half off, or $6.
Or, you can choose biweekly payments. Let’s say you are a shareholder with limited resources and you choose biweekly. You will pay $12.75 immediately (which pays for your first pickup in June) and then another $12.75 the day after that for your second pick up, then you pick up your second share, then you are charged $12.75 the day after that for the third pick up, and so on throughout the season. Higher income shares cost $27 and food justice shares are $43. These prices includes credit card fees.
Each Fresh Stop Market is run by local volunteer shareholders and includes food samples as well as information about the produce including recipes, storage, and nutritional value. To get started, sign up here.
The Gendler Grapevine Fresh Stop Market was the first Fresh Stop Market in the east end of Louisville and has partnered with other local faith and community organizations to help provide fresh food to all. It is sponsored in part by a grant from the Gendler Grapevine Foundation, which funds projects related to Jewish environmentalism and interfaith projects.
