On Sunday, April 17, 40 teens from Louisville’s three Jewish youth group programs – BBYO (B’nai B’rith Youth Organization), based at the Jewish Community Center; NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth), with chapters at The Temple and Temple Shalom; and USY (United Synagogue Youth), a joint chapter affiliated with Adath Jeshurun and Keneseth Israel – participated in J-Serve 2010, the national Jewish teen day of service.

ewish Community of Louisville Board Chair David Klein worked with the teens that day.
With help from Louisville Grows, a nonprofit that helps with community gardens, the teens prepared a large garden bed, started planting a variety of vegetables and dug holes for an orchard that will be planted behind the garden. They also did some general clean up on both the JCC campus and the Jewish Family & Career Services grounds.

Louisville Grows’ landscape architect will continue as a consultant on this project throughout the growing season, and will help the teens construct a system that will collect rainwater in irrigation buckets to minimize water needs for the project. During the weeks of summer camp, the campers will tend the garden. The produce will be donated to JFCS’ food pantry.

Teen members of the J-Serve Committee are Miriam Amchin, Eliza Coleman, Josh Latzko, Tobie Lapin and Rebecca Waller.

JCL Teen Director Justin Sadle, TiLTY Director Laurence Nibur (The Temple’s youth group), SHORTY’s Director (Temple Shalom’s youth group) Ally Baer, and USY Director Lisa Rothstein all helped with the project.
