Herman Landau, the founder of Community, will be inducted posthumously into the duPont Manual High School Hall of Fame on April 18. He is one of 15 people elected this year.
The award recognizes a lifetime of work in journalism and service to the Jewish community. Landau spent 50 years working for The Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times. In the 1930s, he worked on the YMHA’s (Young Men’s Hebrew Association, the predecessor to the Jewish Community Center) house organ, The Chronicler, and helped launch The Spokesman, Louisville’s only Jewish newspaper at the time.
During the Depression, The Spokesman merged with The Chronicler to become The Jewish Post. Landau served as editor and writer for The Post for a number of years, and sometimes fulfilled those functions for the paper’s national edition.
When relations between The Post and the Jewish Community Federation became strained, Landau helped the Federation launch Community, now in its 35th year of publication. On his 80th birthday, Community named him editor emeritus.
Landau is also the author of Adath Louisville: The Story of a Jewish Community and contributed to several other publications as well.
Landau died at age 95 on December 28, 2006.
The induction reception and dinner will be held at the University Club at the University of Louisville on the University of Louisville campus, and is sponsored by the duPont Manual Alumni Association.
