Hadassah Chanukah Event Focused on Oil

Hadassah’s Louisville Chapter met December 6 at the home of Alison Silberman for an evening of cooking, socializing and celebrating the arrival of Chanukah.

The evening started with Chocola-tinis, a drink whipped up by Alison’s husband, Stu.

Robin Wolff talked about the history of oil production in Israel. Then, Bill Gaar from ZiOlive oil shop in Westport Village led a sampling of several olive oils from Greece, Spain, Italy and Israel. Gaar explained the characteristics of each, provided samples, and discussed how to use them in cooking.

Next up was the main course – a cooking lesson delivered by JJ Kingery, the executive chef from Wild Eggs. Kingery taught the attendees various culinary techniques from how to use to use knives to how to enhance the flavor of dishes. It was as much a treat for the eyes as the palate, as he showed off his skills with the flame.

Proceeds from the event support Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, and Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where the Hadassah Medical Organization embodies the concept that medicine serves as a bridge to peace.

Hadassah symbolizes initiative and innovation, education and excellence, caring and commitment. It is a vibrant example of volunteers and professionals working together across countries and continents, helping and healing, dedicated to changing people’s lives.

The local Hadassah chapter seeks to engage a new group of dynamic women who want to make a positive change in Louisville, as well as welcome life members who want to reconnect with the organization. Chapter president Dr. Michelle Ellisburg and Tzivia Levin Kalmes organized the event.
