Chanukah means latkes and dreidels, crafts and cookies, decorations and songs and Shalom Sesame – at least it did on Sunday, December 5, when families from across the community came to Congregation Adath Jeshurun for a family Chanukah party.
After a latke lunch, children from preschool through preteens had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of age-appropriate arts and crafts activities. They decorated Chanukah cookies, painted wooden dreidels, colored window decorations and made edible menorahs.
Cantor David Lipp brought out his guitar and led a Chanukah sing-along, and Sesame Street’s Elmo made a surprise visit, taking time to greet the children and pose for pictures.
At 2, everyone settled down for Shalom Sesame’s Chanukah episode, as characters from the Israeli version of Sesame Street and their visitor from the U.S., Oscar the Grouch, celebrated Chanukah and learned about the holiday. The broadcast was part of AJ’s Live from the 92nd Street Y series.
