The University of Louisville Jewish Studies Program Presents the 2021 Naamani Memorial Lecture: Miriam Udel

“Honey on the Page: The World of Yiddish Children’s Literature”

Free and Open to the Public
RSVP required for Zoom link: Kelly.morris.3@louisville.edu

Please join us for a special virtual event featuring author Miriam Udel discussing her stunning new book of translations of poetry and fiction drawn from Yiddish. This exciting collection takes readers from Jewish holidays and history, to folktales and fairy tales, to stories of humanistic ethics, wisdom and foolishness, class consciousness, and family. Highlighting material from the first decades of the 20th century and stretching into the 1970s, Honey on the Page restores a neglected body of work that helps to tell the story of the Jewish 20th century. Featuring the thought-provoking and moving creativity of more than 25 famous and lesser-known authors published in Eastern Europe, New York, and Latin America, this anthology spans the Yiddish-speaking globe.

Miriam Udel is an associate professor of German Studies and Jewish Studies at Emory University, where her teaching focuses on the Yiddish language and culture. She was ordained in 2019 as part of the first cohort of the Executive Ordination Track at Yeshivat Maharat, a program designed to bring qualified mid-career women into the Orthodox rabbinate. With grace and imagination, she stages meaningful textual conversations between classical and modern Jewish literature. She is also the author of Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press, 2016), winner of the National Jewish Book Award.

The Naamani Memorial Lecture Series was established in 1979 to honor the memory of Professor Israel T. Naamani, key educational figure, scholar and teacher at the University of Louisville, and beloved Jewish community member. The series is supported by donations to the Naamani Memorial Lecture Fund.
