Scholar in Residence @ KI

April 15, 2016 - April 17, 2016

Keneseth Israel Congregation proudly presents Torah Scribe Julie Seltzer as the 2016 David and Reva Waldman Kahn Scholar-in-Residence. Julie  is a scribe, educator and artist. She is the second woman in history known to have written a Torah, and describes scribing as an art that fuses so much of who she is and what she loves: Torah, Hebrew, art, ritual, and meditation. She is currently writing a book that chronicles her spiritual journey and interweaves her thoughts while writing a Torah on display at the contemporary Museum in San Francisco. Her more ephemeral, edible art—specially-shaped challot based on images from the weekly parsha — is another way that she engages with Torah and community life. She resides in the Hudson Valley.
