Mourning Into Dancing | The Music of Debbie Friedman

October 9, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Mourning Into Dancing | The Music of Debbie Friedman with Student Cantor Mike Jarvis Yom Kippur Special Musical Event
Wednesday, October 9 | 12:00-1:00 pm

Arguably one of the most important figures in modern religion, Debbie Friedman and her music are primarily responsible for congregations’ transformation from stoic sanctuaries of organs and hymnals to the joyous gatherings of folk music and pianos and guitars that we know today. Student Cantor Mike Jarvis will share some of the most beautiful pieces from Friedman’s prolific repertoire, most of which are rarely heard in congregations. He’ll also share her remarkable story and why her decision to drag a largely unwilling Reform Movement toward a modern sound may have saved American Judaism.

Originally from Northern Virginia, Student Cantor Mike Jarvis was an executive working in Washington D.C. before feeling a higher calling to a more meaningful life. He received his undergraduate degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia where he double-majored in Vocal Performance and Interdisciplinary Religion before being selected as a candidate for cantorial ordination by the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. He is now in his third year of studies at HUC-JIR’s New York City campus while living on the upper east side of Manhattan. In his spare time, he enjoys weight-lifting, movies and television, and exploring archaic forms of music and linguistics.
