The Baroque & Classical Periods (Oct 1)

The Baroque period (1600-1750) may bring the birth of opera but, like a baby, the form evolves throughout its infancy. Early Baroque (think Monteverdi!) operas used dramatic text and music to express their stories, which were often based on Classical Greek & Roman mythology; sung like a play set to music. By the late Baroque (think Handel!), an increased interest in the voice demanded showy singing, often overshadowing the drama. In the Classical period (1730-1820, think Mozart!), the vocals are comparatively subdued as the orchestra becomes more complex and the storytelling regains importance.

The Bel Canto Period (Oct 8)

The Italian for “Beautiful Singing” says it all; again, the voice dominates this short but impactful period (1805-1840). The music of Rossini, Donizetti & Bellini includes incredible vocal acrobatics; sometimes the dramatic demands are equally as harrowing! A new level of vocal virtuosity is established requiring yet more from the singers!

The Romantic Period (Oct 15)

From 1830-1900, Meyerbeer, Verdi, Wagner & Massenet dominate the scene and take opera to new dramatic and vocal heights; yes, the singers give more than ever before. Bigger orchestras require bigger voices. The vocal challenges are paramount.

The Verismo & Modern Periods (Oct 22)

The exciting period of Italian “realism” (1890-1920) pushes voices even further, demanding sounds never-before heard on opera’s stages – thrilling, but vocally dangerous! Modern (1900-2020) works bring new tonalities, complex harmonies and new challenges just to push singers even furthers….maybe over the edge?
