2011 Elsie P. Judah Award

Elsie P. Judah Award: Rosemary O’Leary

The Elsie P. Judah Award honors an individual who is an outstanding volunteer in the JCL’s Senior Adult Department.

Rosemary O’Leary is this year’s winner of the Elsie P. Judah Award for being an outstanding volunteer and involved member of the Jewish Community Center and its Adult Social Club since 2006, when she relocated to Louisville from Miami. “I’m an Irish Catholic,” says O’Leary, “and I think the JCC is absolutely wonderful. I have never heard of a place like this — it is the best thing since sliced bread.

Everything is fantastic from the meals to the activities to the ease of transportation.”

Despite many health problems, Rosemary has been a very active club member and has participated in all senior activities including Club 60, swimnastics and chair exercise. She also is an involved member of the Senior Adult Committee.

Several years ago, she volunteered to organize the monthly Gourmet Dining Club, which had been on the verge of closing, and she brought it back to life. She constantly calls seniors and invites them to participate. Thanks to her dedication, more than 20 seniors a month take part in the program.

Whenever Rosemary is out in the community, she tells everyone how wonderful the Center is and how it has literally saved her life. Her warmth and inviting personality have made her a favorite among her peers.

She is humbled to receive the Judah award and regrets that illness prevents her from attending the award ceremony.
