Lots of interesting films in this year’s Jewish Film Festival. There are too many films for me to list them all out so go read about all of them and I’ll just tell you about a couple that seem most interesting to me a festival related event that students and admirers of film will enjoy I think.

When does comedy serve a higher purpose than entertainment? Jewish response to Nazism and the Holocaust have utilized humor to attack the perceived power of totalitarianism and assert the dignity and humanity of those who survive to tell the jokes. Visiting filmmaker and film scholar, Stuart Weinstock, will introduce clips from The Great Dictator, The Producers, Life Is Beautiful and other films, offer background on the films, and lead a discussion about their continued relevance.

This “Israeli Monty Python” film was a blockbuster when it opened in Israel last year. A raucous, bawdy and silly comedy, the biblical character Lot and other citizens of Sodom try to resist the temptations of gambling, sex and corruption. If rated, it would certainly be an R.
