Children to Lead 2012 Yom HaShoah Commemoration

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 12, 2012) – “I never saw another butterfly”-Pavel Friedmann

The book by the same name that includes the stirring poem by Holocaust victim Pavel Friedmann will serve as the focal point for the 2012 Yom HaShoah Holocaust Commemoration. Children will share their connections to the Holocaust at the Jewish Community of Louisville’s annual community-event on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at The Temple (5101 US Highway 42). The event is free and the entire community is invited to participate.

Audrey Nussbaum, a 14-year-old from Kentucky County Day School, will preform a one-person play by Celeste Rasplantl based on the book. She felt a connection with the main character of the play, Raja, because they are similar in age. However, Raja went through so much so early in life that Nussbaum wants to help connect her to the audience and build an understanding of what happened in the concentration camps.

“We’re at a pivotal moment, making sure we pass on the stories and memories to the next generation,” said program co-chair Cindy Schwartz. “That’s why this year’s program is being built around youth participating and presenting.”

The Louisville Youth Choir, the Temple Choir will join Nussbaum on stage to sing songs based on the tragic events. Students from Louisville Beit Sefer Yachad, St. Francis of Assisi, Kentucky County Day School and Atherton High School will also participate in the program. A traditional lighting of the candles and recalling of names will honor the memory of all Holocaust victims.
