JHFE Endowed Chair in Judaic Studies

As the newly designated JHFE Endowed Chair in Judaic Studies at the University of Louisville, it is my great pleasure to invite members of the community to audit Spring 2015 offerings by our talented Jewish Studies faculty.
I will be teaching two courses of interest: Reading the Hebrew Bible as Literature/the Hebrew Bible in Contemporary Literature (HUM 362-04) and Israel & Palestine in Literature and Film (HUM 514) which meets just once a week.
Muslims and Jews in the Middle Ages (Hum 596) will be taught by Prof. Pam Beattie and Theory of Religion (HUM 510) will be taught by Prof. Natalie Polzer, who will also teach Introduction to the Hebrew Bible (HUM 311).

In addition, we are very happy to announce an upcoming talk by popular Arab-Israeli novelist Sayed Kashua, also well-known for his work in the groundbreaking Israeli sitcom Arab Labor. He will speak on “The Foreign Mother Tongue: Living and Writing as a Palestinian in Israel” on February 12, from 3-5 p.m. in the Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium on the Belknap campus.
Kashua is the author of three novels: Dancing Arabs, Let it Be Morning, and Second Person Singular, winner of Israel’s prestigious Berstein Prize. Kashua also writes a satirical weekly column in Hebrew for the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz. In a humorous, tongue-in-cheek style, Kashua addresses the problems faced by Arabs in Israel, caught between two worlds.
He is the writer and creator of the hit Israeli TV show Arab Labor (Avoda Aravit), now in it’s third season. In 2004, Kashua was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize in Literature. In his lectures, Kashua provides audiences with a frank and often comical picture of the social and cultural dynamics of Israel/Palestine as they are experienced by someone who straddles the two societies.
