Celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day

Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, was celebrated on Sunday, April 18, at The Temple with a wide variety of activities.

Israeli artist Moshe Bar Kocva presented a special art show with works by Israeli artists, and the Hazamir Choir  and the Shir Chadash chorus performed. There was an Israeli wine tasting, and those in attendance were able to purchase falafel and Israeli salad.

There were plenty of activities for children, too. They explored a giant map of Israel, climbed Masada (an inflatable mountain), and did art projects including stuffed Jewish stars, mosaic hamzas and edible Israeli flags made of graham crackers decorated with icing.

Those interested in leaving messages in the Western Wall had the opportunity to write their prayers and thoughts on bits of paper and to put them in a replica of the sacred structure. These missives were collected at the end of the program and will be delivered to the real Western Wall in Jerusalem later this year.

This program was co-sponsored by The Temple and the Jewish Community of Louisville. Kim Hales organized the event.
